‘Dissolution of assemblies on January 10 likely’

ISLAMABAD: Former secretary of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Kanwar Muhammad Dilshad hinted at the dissolution of the assemblies on January 10 next in view of the fast changing political situation with particular reference to Allama Tahirul Qadri’s ultimatum to the government to mend its ways.

Talking to ‘The News’ here, the veteran electoral expert said that he had already predicted the winding up of the legislatures during January and the latest most significant happening at the Minar-e-Pakistan ground Sunday had further substantiated his viewpoint on this count.

He claimed he had received some hints from the ruling set-up in recent weeks that they wanted to dissolve the assemblies during January. However, they would now more readily do it, as things already appeared to be slipping out of their hands, be it law and order, economy or any other matter of public life.

“Allama Qadri had announced that hundreds of thousands of people will attend his event at Lahore and it happened and now he has announced to lead millions of people’s march on Islamabad next month and he will definitely do it,” he maintained.

He contended that had the rulers delivered and provided the desperately-needed breathing space to masses during these five years, people would not have taken to roads against them and attended the rally of Allama Qadri.

Kanwar Dilshad pointed out that the rulers, already feeling increasingly insecure and looking for new political alignments in the run up to the general election would not risk their future further and could dissolve the assemblies by January 10.

“The ruling coalition will not go beyond the deadline given by the leader of Tehreek-e-Minhaj-al-Quran and give in accordingly,” the ex-secretary of the Election C omission believed.

Replying to a question, he made it clear that people of Pakistan were not opposed to democracy and parliamentary form of government but they were no more ready to remain silent on letting the democratic norms being trampled under the feet of rulers.

“Sunday’s event in Lahore is like a gust of fresh air in the given suffocating political environment and it is like a wake-up call for all of us, particularly those in the corridors of power,” Kanwar Dilshad asserted.
