KARACHI: Master cueist Mohammad Yousuf, who brought home the world snooker title in 1994, feels proud of Mohammad Asif, who has emulated his feat 18 years later.
“Asif is truly an exceptional talent. I am delighted that Pakistan has another world snooker champion. Snooker in Pakistan should come alive now that he has won,” Yousuf stated while talking to ‘The News’ here on Monday.
“It’s a huge blessing. The whole of Pakistan will now be talking of snooker. Asif has made the snooker community as the well as the country proud with his incredible achievement. It augurs very well for the future of the game here,” he reckoned.
“There used to be question-marks about the future of cueists in Pakistan. Now all those guns should be silenced. His title victory will inspire other cueists to work harder and push for glories,” Yousuf said.
He dispelled the impression that Asif’s triumph was a fluke, explaining that the format of the World Championship is always a tough one and generally the best cueist of the competition clinches the trophy. “The standard of opposition in 2012 was as tough as in 1994 because only the best players of the world are able to qualify for it,” Yousuf replied when asked to compare his own title win with that of Asif.
Naveen Kumar Perwani described Asif’s victory in the World Championship as a great opportunity for building of snooker infrastructure in Pakistan. “The government should extend greater support to snooker. The cueists deserve job security because they find it difficult to concentrate on the game in the prevailing circumstances when they are more worried about their bread and butter.”
