Rain, zero gas pressure add to miseries of people

Islamabad

The fresh spell of winter rain started in Rawalpindi, Islamabad with snowfall over the hills in Murree and Galiyat have increased intensity of chill in the atmosphere on Friday. The rain spell in likely to continue till Saturday night. On the other hand the residents of different localities faced zero gas pressure, which increased their problems during extreme chilly weather.

The twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad have received 32 mm rain and hilly areas of Murree and Galiyat received around 2-feet snowfall till the filing of this report.

According to Pakistan Meteorological Department, upper and central parts of Punjab‚ Balochistan‚ Khyber Pakhtunkhwa‚ Parachinar, Rawalakot, AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan have also received intermittent rains. Pakistan Meteorological Department also predicted an increase in the intensity of cold will further increase in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad including upper and central parts of the country during the next two days.

Murree received second snowfall of the winter season this. The snowfall wrapped the whole area in white layer of snow, which caused both delight and trouble for the people. Due to snowfall the vehicular traffic also remained suspended at Murree Expressway, however, traffic wardens with the help of other staff were seen busy in clearing the roads. Police and rescue officials were trying their best to get the tourists out of their misery, but to no avail, as there seemed to be no letup in the inclemency of the weather.

Chief Meteorologist Dr Muhammad Hanif told ‘The News’ that rain and snowfall in hilly areas would continue till Saturday night. “We are expecting rains in most parts of the country including twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad and snowfall in hilly areas of Murree, Galiyat, AJK and Patriyata accompanied by strong north-westerly winds on Saturday as well,” he said. He said that intensity of cold would further increase across the country including in twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Syed Ishtiaq Shah asked tourists desiring to visit Murree or other hilly areas to come with full equipment otherwise they could face serious accidents. He also said that he has deployed majority of traffic wardens in Murree due to slippery roads on Friday. “Roads of Murree will be slippery because of snowfall. He suggested motorists to use petrol rather than compressed natural gas (CNG) while travelling to Murree or other hilly areas during snowfall,” he said.

The rain also created some other problems for the residents as they faced electricity shutdown in some areas and zero gas pressure in majority of areas with the start of the rain. The frequent medium and heavy showers turned many of the roads slippery and dangerous particularly for motorcyclists, with many under-construction roads and streets submerged in knee-deep water. Motorists stuck up and could not move here and there on the occasion. Hospitals received several injured in rain-related incidents particularly motorcyclists.

The most affected areas where people faced zero gas pressure on Friday include Misrial Road, Chakra, Westridge, Saddar, Adiyala Road, Dhoke Seydan, Shakriyal, Dhoke Paracha, Dhoke Kashmirian, Kurri Road, Commercial Market, Raja Bazaar and Morgah. The drains and sewerage system got chocked in some mohallas because of heavy rain exposing the poor performance of civic bodies including Cantonment Board and Chaklala Cantonment Board. Traffic blocked on all the major roads as traffic wardens did not assume their duties. The attendance in government, semi-government offices, schools, colleges and other departments remained low as people and students preferred to stay at home.

On the other hand, people enjoyed cold weather by eating hot and crispy items. They used chicken soup, ‘jalebi’, ‘pakoras’, ‘samosas’ and other crispy items from different markets during rains.
