Polls for NA, PAs to be held on same day: CEC

ISLAMABAD: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice (retd) Fakhruddin G Ebrahim has said elections for the national and provincial assemblies would be held on the same day.

Talking to newsmen here on Monday‚ he said the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) was ready to hold elections at any time.

The CEC said proposals from political parties for delimitation in Karachi were being awaited.

Fakhruddin was talking to the media after rumours that as the dates for the dissolution of the national and provincial assemblies would be different, so the date for polling would also not be the same.

The members of the national and provincial assemblies had taken oath on different dates. The National Assembly members had taken oath on March 16, 2008; the Punjab Assembly members took oath on April 16, 2008; the Sindh Assembly members on April 14; Balochistan Assembly members on April 16 while the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa members had taken oath on April 22, 2008.

According to the Constitution, it is mandatory that the assemblies should complete their five-year terms after taking oath. ECP Secretary Ishtiak Ahmad Khan agrees with the constitutional mandate of the assemblies, saying that the elections for the national and provincial assemblies cannot be held on the same day. However, he said that it was up to the government to decide on which dates the election would be held.

However, the CEC assured the political parties that the elections would be held in a transparent manner under the Constitution. He said that president would announce the date for the holding of general elections, after which the ECP would issue a schedule for the polls.
