ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q) will contest the upcoming polls as a separate entity and will use its own election symbol (bicycle) and not that of its major coalition partner, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). The leadership of the two parties has reached an understanding that they will not pit their candidates against each other. There will be no contest between arrow and bicycle in any constituency. The PML-Q has worked out its plan of action for the polls but the leadership of the ruling alliance will have an important get-together soon after President Asif Zardari’s return from the foreign visit.
The PML-Q secretary general Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed, who has gone to Indonesia, will also return by then. The PML-Q president Senator Chaudhary Shujaat Hussain will hold an important meeting of his party’s MPs here this week to discuss the plan of action that will become part of the strategy supposed to be evolved in consultation with the PPP and other allies later.
Well-placed political sources told The News here Sunday that some PPP stalwarts from Punjab, especially its new president, are in panic due to last week’s results of the by-elections. But the PML-Q feels confident because its candidate defeated the group that had changed loyalties and had joined hands with the Pakistan Muslim League of Nawaz Sharif (PML-N) immediately after last general elections. The number of votes bagged by the PML-Q in the by-polls was more than what it got in the previous contest. The PML-Q president will have a meeting with Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf in Islamabad early this week to discuss with him the plan of action his party experts have developed, the sources said. Political observers are of the view that the improvement in the performance of the PML-Q is not the result of PML-Q’s popularity but because of its leaders’ political moves and strategy evolved for each constituency by the party leaders.
