‘MQM must be taken into confidence’

Karachi

Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) secretary general has said all stake holders, including the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), should be taken into confidence over delimitation of the metropolitan’s constituencies.

Talking to The News on Sunday, Imtiaz Ahmed Sheikh said delimitation of the constituencies should not be confined only to Karachi. It should be expanded to all over Sindh, he added.

Sheikh also said the MQM had raised an objection over the delimitation process. “If it’s the order of the Supreme Court, it’s binding on all,” he added.

PML-F is against the MQM over the local government issue, but the former is supporting the latter’s objection over delimitation.

Explaining the fact in light of the law, Sheikh said the election commission had all-encompassing powers under section 10(A) of the delimitation act, so they could delimit the constituencies without census when necessary.

With regard to the law and order situation of Karachi, he said the army’s help should be sought if required.

He demanded the government should step down as there is no writ of the government in place. The PML-F leader said the law and order situation was horrifying and target killings had caused a scare among the citizens.

Politics of agitation

“Let the opposition engage in their politics of agitation, and as a result, the worst sufferers will be the poor,” said the Sindh local bodies minister.

Agha Siraj Durrani said the committee constituted by President Asif Ali Zardari was working on its given task, and estranged parties as well as other political and religious parties would be contacted in this regard.

When asked about corruption in the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Durrani said it could not be stopped because the judiciary would have to ask the parliament to change the law, or else corruption would continue and the corrupt would keep getting the benefit of doubt from the court due to flaws in the law.

‘Don’t confine it to city’

PML-Quaid leader Halim Adil Sheikh said delimitation of the city’s constituencies should not be confined only to Karachi and expanded to the entire country.

When The News asked his opinion over the Supreme Court’s suggestion of seeking the army’s help to control the law and order problem of Karachi, he said he was against the idea because it would send the wrong message to the world.

“Karachi is an international city and not Chichawatni,” he said. “This will send the wrong message regarding the army, implying that they are moving against civilians.”

He said the Rangers either have not been able to play their due role in maintaining law and order in Karachi or they do not have powers to do so. He said it was the duty of the government to provide protection to the life and property of the citizens, and it has so far failed in doing so.
