INDIAN High Commissioner in Pakistan Sharat Sabharwal has said Pakistan and India should work together and move forward from poverty to prosperity.
He said India wanted liberal trade and economic ties with Pakistan and to take forward the same in order to create a win-win situation for both countries.
He was speaking at a memorial service held at a private university on Sunday evening to honour late Inder Kumar Gujral, former prime minister of India. He said principles of late I K Gujral, including greater trust and greater friendship, were still valid in Indian policy.
The ceremony was attended by people from different walks of life, including vice rector of the university, Dr Donald Douglas.
The participants paid homage to late I K Gujral, and “A Distinguished Alumni Award” was also awarded to him by the university vice rector which was received by the Indian High commissioner.
Sharat Sabharwal said late I K Gujral was a supporter of enhanced people-to-people contact of both countries.
“We should all work together and move from poverty to prosperity”, he said while talking about the vision of late I K Gujral with regard to peaceful co-existence.
While sharing biography of India’s former premier, Sharat Sabharwal said I K Gujral was born in Jhelum and was active in freedom movement. “In 1942, Gujral went to jail in connection with the Quit India campaign, he added. He also talked about Gujral’s love for poetry of legendary poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz.
