Families appeal to kidnappers to free 16 coal miners


BISHAM: The families of the 16 coalminers abducted by unidentified gunmen from Kalakhel area in Frontier Region Peshawar in September 2011 Monday appealed to the kidnappers to release them on humanitarian grounds.

Talking to reporters, the families of the coalminers belonging to Basiya, Belibaba and Shahpur villages in Shangla district said they had lost contact with their near and dear ones since they were abducted one and half year ago.

They said the poor wage-earners were employed by a coalmine in the lawless Kalakhel area in Frontier Region Peshawar. The abducted persons, including three brothers Sardar Hussain, Sardar Rahman and Imam Hussain and three other brothers named Said Aslam, Aman Khan and Qabil Muhammad.

Others among the abducted labourers were Umar Rahman, Zahir Rahman, Mohammad Azam, Umar Mohammad, Sajid Gul, Dosham Gul, Bakht Shahzada, Dil Muhammad, Umarzada and Sherbaz.

Elderly Wazir Rahman, who is father of the three kidnapped miners, said in a choked voice: “I am unable to work due to my old age. We have been starving since the kidnapping of my sons. I don’t know the fate of my sons and the questions being asked by their small children and the ordeal of their mother and wives is heart-rending for me.”

The father of another abducted miner, Mohammad Rahman appealed to the kidnappers to set the labourers free on humanitarian grounds to bring an end to their suffering.

Juma Gul, whose two sons are among the coalminers, appealed to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister to help recover the kidnapped persons.

Meanwhile, various political leaders in Shangla, including Member Provincial Assembly Rishad Khan, Pakistan People’s Party president for Malakand region Dr Afsarul Mulk, Awami National Party district office-bearer Said Fareen Khan, Sultan Rom Khan and Faiz Khan of the Qaumi Watan Party constituted a jirga to meet the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governor and the chief minister to seek their help for the safe release of the coalminers.
