Rawalpindi: Long queues of vehicles and rowdy scenes were witnessed on those few CNG stations which were somehow supplying the compressed natural gas on Sunday.
Motorists were seen fighting with each other to get their vehicle filled with the CNG, as majority of CNG stations in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad remained closed due to the unannounced strike by the owners.The police and traffic wardens intervened to calm down the motorists at Bakramandi, Talhi Mohri, Podri Chowk, Jhelum Road etc.
As per routine, a few CNG stations were opened in Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Sunday where thousands of vehicles were witnessed in long queues as more than 80 percent stations are on strike with the full backing of the All Pakistan CNG Station Owners Association against the Supreme Court’s decision of reducing the prices of gas fuel.
People in Rawalpindi and Islamabad are facing problems due to the closure of CNG stations. The All Pakistan CNG Association (APCNGA) and Potohar Region CNG Association reiterated that the strike would continue indefinitely if the government did not increase the prices of gas.
The chairman of the All Pakistan CNG Association (APCNGA) Ghayas Abdullah Piracha made it clear that the government has yet not contacted the association for resolving the matter in the better interest of public. He said that majority of owners did not agree to open the stations. “I cannot do anything against it,” he said.
On the 11th consecutive day of the strike, the motorists had to face problems. Taking advantage of the situation, public transporters as well as taxi drivers are charging extra fares from commuters.
People from different walks of life while talking to The News expressed severe anger over the stubborn attitude of the government and CNG station owners. Tariq Mehmood, a motorist, said, “I am here in a long queue for four hours but failed to get the CNG.
“We are already perturbed over inflation, scarcity of water and several other problems and the closure of CNG stations has added to our miseries.”Robina Nawaz said that the government, instead of doing anything to overcome the energy crisis, had been found creating more problems for the general public with each passing day.
