Another bombing bid foiled in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: The bomb disposal unit (BDU) on Sunday defused an explosive device planted in a motorbike near Tarnab Farms on the Grand Trunk Road while the forensic reports confirmed that one of the two men killed in Saturday night’s blast was wearing an explosive jacket.

Assistant Inspector General (AIG) BDU Shafqat Malik told The News that they were tipped off about a suspicious motorbike parked near the Tarnab Farms in the jurisdiction of Chamkani Police Station and experts were rushed to the area.

“We defused around six kilograms of multiple-trigger explosives planted in the bike,” said Shafqat Malik.A police official said the target of the explosives might be patrolling cars of vehicles of VVIPs using the road.

Meanwhile, the two dead in the Saturday’s Wazir Bagh blast were identified as Iqbal and Sadiq. Iqbal is stated to be a resident of Khyber Agency. He was granted bail by a local court in recent past after he was arrested in the murder case of former MPA Alamzeb. “The forensic analysis of the body of one of those killed has confirmed that he was wearing a suicide jacket. The other might be the handler,” Shafqat Malik said.

Police officials suspected that the two men killed in the blast might be the suicide bomber and his handler carrying explosives to target some high-value target but they could not reach there and mishandled the bomb. Two motorcyclists were killed as a huge blast in an empty plot near the historic Wazir Bagh rocked Peshawar late Saturday night. The explosion was so powerful that it was heard all over the provincial capital.

The police had found two charred bodies at the site of the blast. A pistol was also recovered from there, a source said. A number of improvised explosive devices have gone off or were defused in the Chamkani area during recent months.

Last month, a bomb went off close to the residence of former Jamaat-e-Islami MNA from NA-4 Peshawar constituency, Sabir Hussain Awan in the same Tarnab village. However, no casualty was reported in the explosion.
