LAHORE
THE
Lahore High Court on Wednesday ordered the city police to remove all
hurdles erected at 15 Chowk on Lawrence Road for the security of the ISI
office.
The court directed police to clear the road and
open it for public use, observing that closing down public thoroughfare
was a sheer violation of fundamental rights.
Justice
Ibadur Rehman Lodhi issued the order while accepting the petition moved
by owner of a filing station near a sensitive agency’s office against
closure of the road.
The petitioner Rizwan Ahamd through
his counsel contended that he had running business for 50 years on the
said place but, for the last one year, the CCPO Lahore and the SP Civil
Lines blocked the road daily from 9:00am to 9:00 pm for the traffic
leading towards China Chowk. The petitioner pointed out that barricades
erected on the road were not only causing problems to the filling
station staff but commuters were also facing agony due to long hour
traffic jam on the adjacent roads.
The petitioner said
the LHC had already issued orders to police in a number of cases to
remove hurdles from public thoroughfares but hurdles were not cleared
from the Lawrence Road.
On Wednesday, SP Civil Lines
Abdul Qamar and SP legal Ijaz Gillani appeared before the court and
stated that the road had been closed for security reasons because
offices of sensitive agencies were located in the area.
The
court, however, turned down their plea and remarked that police had no
legal ground to block public road. The right of life was the fundamental
right of every citizen, the court added.
Veena: The
Lahore High Court on Wednesday returned a petition, seeking registration
of high treason case against actress Veena Malik on charges of
tarnishing the image of Pakistan world over by doing an objectionable
photo shoot in India.
The LHC registrar office put
objection on the petition that no one could approach court directly for
registration of high treason case and the petitioner should approach the
interior ministry at first instance.
Major (retd) Faisal Naseer Khan had moved the petition.
damages
case: The District Consumer Court on Wednesday issued notices to the
proprietor of an electronics shop by December 20 in a case seeking
damages for allegedly selling a defective UPS.
As per case
details, Zeeshanur Rehaman contended in his petition that he had
purchased a UPS from an electronics shop located at Johar Town after
paying Rs8,900 upon which respondent gave him warrantee of free
