PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain on Saturday said Malala Yousafzai had united the nation to fight the scourge of terrorism that has now spread to Karachi and Quetta.
“She is the daughter of the entire nation and the attack on her was an assault on the whole Pakhtun nation,” he told a function and an education seminar held in connection with the “Malala Day” observed on the call of the United Nations.
Both events were arranged by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Civil Society Network, an umbrella organization of civil society groups in the province, to pay homage to Malala Yousafzai, who was seriously injured in an attack by the militants in Mingora city in Swat on October 9.
Linking the roots of terrorism to the situation in Afghanistan, the minister reiterated that US, Afghanistan and Pakistan as the three major stakeholders should overcome trust deficit with each other and come up with a clear agenda about their strategy to fight terrorism in the region.
“They should decide either to hold talks with the terrorists or eliminate them,” he said. He added that the half-hearted fight against the terrorists and an ambiguous agenda of the three countries is aggravating the situation.
He said the fire ignited by terrorists in Afghanistan had now engulfed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Karachi and Quetta and it needed to be put out by all means.
Mian Iftikhar, who is a senior leader of the Awami National Party (ANP) and was also a victim of the ongoing militancy as his lone son was killed by militants, said that regardless of their ethnic identity all those engaged in terrorist acts were terrorists and should be eliminated.
Counting the sacrifices rendered by his party during the “war on terror,” he said the ANP was still the biggest hurdle in the way of the terrorists to accomplish their sinister agenda. “It (ANP) is ready to render more sacrifices to foil the nefarious designs of the terrorists. Unlike previous governments we are not afraid of speaking to the world about these terrorists. We have exposed them. They are targetting us, but we will not bow to them,” Mian Iftikhar resolved.
The minister said they were not celebrating “Malala Say” to pay honour to the 15-year old girl only, but were taking part in the day’s functions with a zeal to pay homage to all those men, women and children who laid their lives and rendered sacrifices during the fight against terrorism. He lauded the international community for standing by Malala and the people of Pakistan.
Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party General Secretary Arbab Mujeeb, Member Provincial Assembly Nasim Katozai and members of the civil society organisations were also present.
