Karachi killings echo in Senate, NA

ISLAMABAD: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Tuesday staged walk out both from the Senate and National Assembly against target killings in Karachi while members from opposition and treasury benches demanded constitution of a parliamentary commission on this particular issue.
The MQM was highly critical of the government, both Houses of Parliament. In the National Assembly Abdul Qadar Khanzada of the MQM speaking on the floor of the House said the law and order situation in Karachi was highly alarming and they would observe complete boycott of the ongoing session if no effective reaction came from the government by Wednesday. He said the government was also withdrawing bounty on heads of terrorists while the interior minister was also missing from the House.

Meanwhile, in the Senate, Abdul Qadar Khanzada MNA of MQM said the law and order situation in Karachi was further deteriorating but the two major political parties were indifferent to the problem as if it was not their issue. “We stage walk out from the assembly against the attitude of two parties,” he said.

Shakih Rohail Asghar of PML-N strongly defended his party. He said that he wanted to make it clear that the N league had been raising voice against target killings in Karachi from the very first day.

He asked MQM to quit the government and tell the masses that it is with them in the difficult period, he said. He also suggested that the report of the joint investigation committee and proposals of the Supreme Court on Karachi situation should also be presented in the National Assembly.

Maulvi Ismatullah of JUI-F said the killing of students of seminaries in Karachi was highly regrettable and the condemnable.Ms Bushra Gohar of ANP proposed that a parliamentary committee comprising members from all the parties should be formed to review situation in Karachi.

Ms Kashmala Tariq said that it should also be looked into whether law and order situation is being created in Karachi to delay next general elections. She also questioned if Defence Housing and Askari Schemes, where law and order situation was not bad, were not part of Karachi. “It gives an impression that the administration can maintain peace in the area where it desires,” she said.

Abdul Rashid Godail of MQM said the incident of terrorism would rise with increase in unemployment due to closure of industry in the Sindh capital.

In the Senate MQM’s Mustafa Kamal said, “Today, people are being targeted irrespective of their religious or political background and even the common man on the street is being shot dead.”

ANP Senators Muhammad Zahid Khan and Ilyas Bilour regretted that the situation in Karachi was worsening day by day but neither the provincial nor the federal government was in a mood to intervene. They feared things could be beyond imagination during the month of Muharramul Haram, if corrective measures were not taken now.

Bilour said, “Enough is enough. This House has heard much rhetoric. It is time for PM to take the House into confidence with regards to Karachi, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He called for army operation without which there can be no peace in Karachi.

PML-N Senator Mushahidullah Khan alleged that civil war had broken out in the mega city and the rulers were focused on other priorities in the name of reconciliation. He alleged that the ruling party and allies were equal partners in bringing Karachi and Pakistan to the morass. He charged their speeches and walkouts were for the media to make headlines and run tickers
