Karachi
A central leader of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (Fazlur Rehman faction) and religious scholar, Maulana Hamdullah Jan, has strongly condemned Saturday’s attack on the students of an Islamic seminary in the city.
At least six students of Jamia Ahsanul Uloom were killed and over a dozen wounded when gunmen riding motorcycles opened fire on a tea stall in the Gulshan-e-Iqbal neighbourhood.
“Innocent students leave their homes to seek Islamic knowledge and, according to Islamic teachings, they are guests of Allah Who will take His revenge of this cruelty in His own way,” Maulana Hamdullah said in a statement.
“Do our rulers need permission from [US President Barack] Obama to say a few words of sympathy to the families of the students who were acquiring Islamic knowledge?” he said.
“A student is a student — be it from a religious school or be it Malala. The attack on Malala was, undoubtedly, an act of barbarism, but how about the attack on these Madrassa students?”
Maulana Hamdullah demanded the government arrest the attackers and give them exemplary punishment.
He appreciated the approach of Jamia Ahsanul Uloom’s administrator Mufti Zarwali Khan, who sent the bodies of the students to their native areas for burial to avoid further violence in the city.
