Diabetes awareness session held at Shifa International

Islamabad

Consultant endocrinologist at Shifa International Hospital Dr. Usama Ishtiaq Wednesday advised diabetic patients to adopt precautionary measures to prevent amputation of limbs. Over 7 million people in Pakistan fall victim to diabetes every year.

He was addressing a public awareness seminar organised by Shifa International Hospital in connection with World Diabetes Day. A large number of diabetic patients, doctors, medical students and people from various walks of life attended the seminar. Free blood tests to check diabetes were conducted on the occasion.

Consultant endocrinologist Dr. Mazhar-ul-Haq, consultant cardiologist Dr. Yousaf Hassan and nutritionist Aman Afridi also spoke on the occasion. Later, all speakers and consultant endocrinologist Dr. Naseem Yousaf, consultant nephrologist Dr. Syed Nayyer Mahmood and consultant ophthalmologist Dr. Sadia Farooq answered queries of patients in the question-answer session.

Dr. Ishtiaq said diabetes can adversely affect the eyes, brain, heart, kidneys and legs, and is also one of the major causes of blindness and kidney failure. “Frequent urination, severe thirst, sudden loss of weight, fatigue and weakness are important symptoms of diabetes. Balanced diet, regular physical activity, weight control, regular intake of medication and regular testing of blood glucose level are a few factors that can help control diabetes and its complications,” he observed.

Dr. Mazhar-ul-Haq said prevention of diabetes is more important than its treatment. He urged diabetic patients to strictly check their lifestyle and dietary habits to avoid serious complications including amputation of limbs. “You need to pay close attention to foot health, especially when there is significantly diminished blood flow and nerve damage (neuropathy),” he said. He advised pregnant diabetic women to specially follow the instructions of their doctor in order to avoid complication that can also affect the new-born. Prevention of diabetes is possible with rigorous lifestyle interventions, 30 minutes of daily exercise, at least twice a month dietary advice, and early treatment for cholesterol and BP.

Consultant cardiologist Dr. Yousaf Hassan said patients with diabetes are at very high risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and peripheral vascular diseases. “They face a higher risk of heart attack and heart failure than normal persons,” he stated.

Nutritionist Aman Afridi highlighted the importance of diet in the management of diabetes. She also underlined factors affecting individual diet of diabetic patients such as type of diabetes, complications, medications, blood sugar control, past medical history, height, weight, age, gender, dietary history, food allergies and physical activity. Aman also shared a sample diet plan for patients with diabetes, and emphasized the need to include fibre in the diet. She said, bran wheat, fruits and vegetables contain fibre that has virtually zero calories. Fibre is equally beneficial for patients with cardiac diseases, she added.
