Australia thrash Pakistan 5-1

KARACHI: Pakistan’s dismal run at the Sultan of Johor Cup junior hockey tournament in Johor Baru (Malaysia) continued on Monday when they were hammered 5-1 by Australia.

The Pakistanis, who were held to a 3-3 draw by New Zealand in their opening match despite enjoying a 3-0 lead at one stage, flopped miserably against the Aussies in a match that was affected by rain.

The second half of the match only resumed after a 90 minute delay due to adverse weather conditions and forced the following matches to be delayed by an hour.

It was a remarkable performance as the Aussies had to come from a goal down to register the win after they lost 2-0 to India.

The exchanges were even in the first five minutes, akin to two fighters in a boxing ring, sizing up each other.

Pakistan went on the offensive and were duly rewarded as Mohamad Dilber scored in the 11th minute to give them a 1-0 lead.

But the Aussies were more composed compared to their match against India where they lost 2-0 the previous day. Australia were duly rewarded for their patient build up as Dylan Wotherspoon made his way to the semi-circle before relaying a pass to Blake Govers who slipped the ball past an onrushing Mazhar Abas in goal in the 28th minute.

After a 90-minute rain delay, the two teams took to the piitch. Australia just needed four minutes to take the lead as Dylan Wotherspoon nipped in just infront of Mazhar to deflect the initial attempt by Mathew Dawson.

Justin Douglas further compounded the problems for Pakistan by scoring Australia’s third in the 52nd minute.

Willmore Gillian further extended Aunstralia’s lead to 4-1 by scoring in the 58th minute. Wotherspoon converted a penalty stroke in the 68th minute to seal a comprehensive win for Australia.

Meanwhile, India placed themselves as the firm favourites in the tournament after they beat five-time World Cup holders Germany 3-1 at the Taman Daya Stadium. Two wins over two top teams, Australia and Germany have given India the perfect start for the tournament. Hosts Malaysia fell 5-2 against unsung New Zealand in their second match of the event.
