400 stranded as snow blocks Lowari Top

CHITRAL:
At least 400 passengers, including women and children, were stranded as the Lowari Top was closed to traffic following rain and snowfall.

It was learnt that the snowfall started last night, leading to the closure of the Lowari Top. Some 400 passengers were stranded on the Dir side of the Lowari Tunnel.

Iqbal Hayat, a passenger, told The News that they had been stranded since last night. He said they were faced with severe cold and inclement weather.

There was unrest among the people as the passengers were not being allowed to travel via the Lowari Tunnel, which has been under construction in recent years.

Though there were reports that the Federal Minister for Communications Dr Arbab Alamgir Khan had ordered the authorities concerned to open the Lowari Tunnel, the local administration was reluctant to open the tunnel for regular traffic due to unknown reasons.
