Life Like Depiction of Images on Sarees

Indian sarees have beautiful motifs and patterns. These designs are mainly made of zari, block prints, threadwork, sequin work and at times thread drawn from gold. Sometimes the designs are printed or fabricated accordingly. With the advent of industrialization saree weaving has also become mechanized to a certain extent. Though master weavers in different parts of the country continue to keep the art of weaving traditional motifs and patterns on sarees. These images of the motifs are inspired by the rich Indian heritage and culture that are engraved on the walls of the temples that have stood for centuries. Temples from North to South and from west to eastern India depict the then socio-political history.
Infact the enriched history of the country has been documented as sculptures on these temples. Weavers, for generations are inspired by these images while they manufacture sarees. The impressions are life-like featuring themes of Geeta Govind, Radha Krishna saga, mythologies, stories of Ramayana and the Mahabharata.
Pata Chitra pictures on sarees are very popular in West Bengal, Orissa, Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh. In Sanskrit, "Pata" means cloth and the meaning of the word "Chitra" is painting. The combination of the terms mean painting on the cloth. The theme is almost elevated to a form of art where the sarees are canvas and the weavers are painters. Pata chitra itself is an ancient Bengali art form. Paintings of Jamini Ray are quite similar to pata chitra art. Sarees with these designs look amazing.
Today designers mix and match ethnic and modern themes and motifs to create fancy wear especially dress sarees and lehengas. In fact, their clients want to explore more and more fabricated works of these prints on sarees and other apparels. The demand for Indian traditional and designer sarees is high in the international market. Today, some of the biggest saree brands of India are marketing their best sarees online via their corporate websites and through other ecommerce sites.
Besides creative impressions of folklores, gods and goddesses, the sarees with mythological images also carry the tale of ancient mythologies in a lucid form. Rich colors are used to build the theme of the patachitra sarees. Vibrant colors and ethnic patterns are the key feature of these sarees. Designers can paint these impressions on any fabric such as cotton, silk, tussar, polyesters, kora silks, georgettes and so on. Traditionalists always prefer to buy sarees with pata chitra art on silks, tussar and cotton.
Murals of the art works on sarees are centered on the Puri temple, the sun temple of Konark and the Lingaraj temple of Bhubaneshwar. Alongside, organic colors are used by the "chitrakars" (painters) to brighten up the flowers, leaves, branches of trees, birds and other things. Rust, golden, shocking red, yellow, black and white are some of the chosen colors of the painters when they are depicting life like images on the sarees.
Some quintessential features of the pata chitra are the vivid lines that are very clean and clear maintaining the angles perfectly. Those are quite angular and sharp. These figures are painted under the backdrop of the vibrant colored bases. The decoration of the borders and the theme of the complete design set up changes according to narrations.
