KARACHI: Karachi Dolphins conceded their first defeat on Sunday when they were beaten by Rawalpindi Rams by five runs in a sensational finish of their Group B match of the Faysal Bank T20 Cup 2012-13 at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Sunday.
Chasing 189, Dolphins needed 16 runs from the last three balls. Fawad Alam hit Sohail Tanvir for a six, then for a four before leaving the last ball un-attempted, thinking it to be a wide ball.
Fawad scored 40 not out off 17 balls, hitting four boundaries and two sixes. The left-hander added 53 runs from 30 balls for the sixth wicket with Tanvir Ahmed who cracked 20-ball 33 with five fours to help their side get close to the target.
Dolphins had a shocking start when they lost Shahzaib Hasan for a first-ball duck.
But Khurram Manzoor (50) looked in good nick as he added 51 runs for the second wicket with Khalid Latif who fell for 17-ball 25 with four fours.
Khurram then added 49 crucial runs for the third wicket with Asad Shafiq who was trapped leg before off Hammad Azam for 21 off 22 balls with two fours.
Hammad then removed Khurram in the same over to reduce Dolphins to 104-4 in 13 overs. Khurram hit five fours and a six in his 37-ball half century.
In the very next over Umar Amin sent Afridi (3) back to leave the job to Fawad and Tanvir who failed to finish it. Hammad was the most impressive as he picked 2-27 while Yasir Arafat claimed 2-42.
Earlier, after opting to bat, Rams’ batsmen looked in awesome mood as they punished Dolphins’ bowlers with some merciless hitting.
Left-handed Awais Zia and Naved Malik set the tone with a healthy 64 runs from 44 balls for the first wicket association before Malik was caught by Asad Shafiq off Tanvir Ahmed for 39. The right-hander hit two fours and three sixes.
After Malik’s fall left-hander Babar Naeem joined Awais and when they had taken the score to 101 in 10.4 Shahid Afridi clean bowled Zia with a delivery that spun sharply. Awais belted run-a-ball 22 with two sixes and a four.
Umar Amin and Babar Naeem then continued the firework and added 35 runs from 22 balls before the latter fell to Mohammad Sami for 23-ball 44. Babar, who had survived a close leg before appeal of Shahid Afridi, smashed seven fours.
Umar Amin played a magical innings of 52 not out to steer Rams to a formidable total. He hit three sixes and four fours in his blistering 31-ball innings.
Tanvir Ahmed took 2-28 while Mohammad Sami picked 1-20 in four overs. Shahid Afridi grabbed 1-49 in four overs, while Sohail Khan conceded 33 in three overs and Anwar Ali gave away 39 runs in four overs.
In a Group A game, Karachi Zebras defeated Islamabad Leopards by four runs to open their account. In pursuit of 122, Leopards required 15 runs from the last over of medium pacer Rumman Raees. But Rumman removed dangerous Imad Wasim (34) on his first ball and then checked the tail-enders to restrict Leopards to 117-9. Imad clobbered five fours and a six in his 16-ball firework. Tabish Khan and Haris Ayaz got two wickets each.
Earlier, Test pacer Iftikhar Anjum took 4-16 in fours over to restrict Zebras to 121-8. Faisal Iqbal top-scored with 26 off 33 balls.
Ramiz Raja, Sheharyar Ghani and wicket-keeper Javed Mansoor scored 15 runs each.
Holders Sialkot Stallions, powered by Shoaib Malik’s all-round performance, annihilated Quetta Bears by 72 runs. Malik hit 51 off 33-balls to guide Stallions to 149-7 in the stipulated overs. The former Pakistan captain then took 4-13 in his four overs to help Stallions bowl Bears out for just 77 in 17.5 overs.
Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Umaid Asif and Shahid Yousuf grabbed two wickets each.
Lahore Lions notched their second victory, beating Abbottabad Falcons by 30 runs. Test wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal blasted 59 off just 33 balls with nine fours and a six to help Lions score 186-4.
Opener Nasir Jamshed had hit 39 off 35 balls with six fours. The left-hander put on 51 runs for the opening stand with Ahmed Shehzad, who hit 28 off 26 balls with five, and then added 62 runs with Kamran Akmal for the second wicket. Umar Akmal belted a quick-fire 13-ball 22 with two fours and a six. Ahmed Jamal took 2-37.
Lions were missing their star batsman Mohammad Yousuf due to his daughter’s illness, coach Mohsin Kamal told ‘The News’.
In reply, Falcons were restricted to 156-6. Skipper Younis Khan hit a quick-fire 32-ball 47 with five fours and a six. Yasir Hameed (45) and Mir Azam (29) had given a fiery start to Falcons but the middle order, apart from Younis, failed to click.

Debutants Bahawalpur notched their second win when they outgunned Peshawar Panthers by 29 runs. Stags were all out for 129 in 19 overs with Bilal Khilji scoring 33 and Usman Tariq making 29.
Waqar Ahmed, Imran Khan and Azizullah claimed two wickets each. In reply, Panthers were dismissed for 105 in 18.5 overs. Mohammad Rizwan hit 36 with three fours while Gauhar Ali made 11-ball 18.
Kashif Siddiq bowled splendidly by picking 3-11 in four overs While Imranullah Aslam and Faisal Elahi claimed two wickets apiece.
Faisalabad Wolves opened their Group B campaign nicely when they defeated Lahore Eagles by five wickets.
Lahore Eagles perished for 103. Imran Farhat top-scored with 20. Asad Ali took 3-19 while Khurram Shehzad, Imran Khalid and Saeed Ajmal got two wickets each.
