SSGC workers threaten to besiege head office

Karachi

The People’s Labour Union (CBA) of the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) demanded that the management accept its Charter of Demand 2012-14 immediately and regularise contractual employees, who have worked for around 20 years, otherwise the gas utility’s head office would be besieged on December 17.

The union expressed its commitment to make every possible effort to protect the legal rights of the labourers. These views were expressed by the chairman of the union, Riaz Akhtar Awan, during a meeting held in Gulshan-e-Iqbal.

In his speech, he stated that after the issuance of a presidential ordinance, the issue of pay fixation should also be resolved and the jobs of employees restored.

He said that the Punjab Oil and Gas Development Corporation started regularising 2,900 employees, who were earlier working on a contractual basis, whereas the employees of Sindh and Balochistan were being pushed against the wall and deprived of their basic rights.

He said that thousands of employees were working for the organisation without any terms and conditions for 30 years and at minimum salaries. Awan said the employment of these workers was being terminated if they dared to raise their voice against the injustice.

The chairman of the union said the management was reminded time and again to regularise the contractual employees. He said that the workers would no longer remain silent over the matter.

Rizwan Malah, Zafar Daud, Zahid Shoaib, Gul Esa and other workers’ representatives were also present on the occasion.
