SAF Games camps likely at NSTCC

KARACHI: The director general Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) Akhtar Nawaz Ganjera visited the National Sports Training and Coaching Centre (NSTCC) on Sunday to review its various sports facilities.

‘The News’ learnt that the PSB director general paid the visit to review the facilities required for holding the camps of boxing and table tennis for the preparation of SAF Games, to be held next year in India.

Sources said that the PSB administration wanted to organise the national training camps of boxing and table tennis for SAF Games and national junior teams of various disciplines at the Karachi center.

At least nine training camps have been organised in PSB Islamabad Jinnah Complex.

Ganjera also visited the broken wall of NSTCC and reviewed its condition, sources said.

The DG told ‘The News’ that he had directed the coaching center administration to maintain and upgrade the facilities required for organising the national training camps.

He said that PSB’s Karachi center was under consideration for holding the camps of boxing and table tennis because of its suitable environment and better facilities.

He said the centre was highly recommended for the purpose, but the final decision would be taken only after the local administration completed all arrangements for the training camps.

He avoided talking about the reconstruction of the broken wall, but confirmed that he had visited the place whose ugly look is tarnishing the image of the centre. He said the local officers were looking after this problem.

It is pertinent to mention here that various projects of NSTCC have been in jeopardy since the approval of 18th amendment and various issues are yet to be decided.

At least eight big projects have already been handed over to the Sindh government since the 18th Amendment.

The Sindh government is willing to take the control of the national coaching center and has continued correspondence with the federal government in this regard, but a final decision is yet to be taken.

Because of the coming elections, the government has been unable to give attention to the matters of sports and it remains unclear who would hold the administrative control of the national coaching center, sources said. The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) is trying to retain the control of its coaching centers in all four provinces.
