RENALA KHURD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira on Monday said that politicians would decide the country’s affairs and not the military or the judiciary. He made it clear that no extra-constitutional step would be tolerated and a political president was the requirement of the Constitution.
Addressing a gathering at the GT Road near Renala Khurd, he said only the people of Pakistan and parliament knew what kind of president they wanted. He said his party had great respect for the judiciary but it should stay away from making decisions on political issues, otherwise it would have to face criticism.
He said that Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif should stop imitating Zulfikar Ali Bhutto by hitting mikes on the stage.
He said that Shahbaz could not attain the status of great leaders like the Bhuttos.
Kaira said that the leaders of PML-N couldn’t be equivalent to the PPP leaders who had sacrificed their lives for a cause, and the Sharif brothers went into exile instead of rising to the occasion.
He said Shahbaz wasted funds of billions of rupees in the name of providing bread to the poor. Around Rs70 billion had been spent on a single road creating inferiority complex in the population of the whole of Punjab, he said, adding the Punjab government had spent 70 percent of the provincial budget only on Lahore.
Kaira said the Sharif brothers first said they did not sign a pact with the dictator but when the agreement came out in the public, they said the contract had lasted for five years instead of 10.
He said if President Asif Zardari wanted, he could have become the prime minister and enjoyed immense powers, but he did the contrary and delegated all his powers to parliament.
Criticising the Punjab chief minister, Kaira said the loyalties of youth could not be bought by distribution of laptops.
He said the loyalties of youth could be won by introducing good policies and offering sacrifices.
He said the nomination of the new Punjab governor was not a conspiracy against anyone.
When the PPP came into power back in 2008, there was a shortage of flour, but now Pakistan was exporting millions of tons of wheat, he added. “There is hue and cry over inflation, but price-hike is a global phenomenon,” he maintained.
The minister rejected the deadline given by the head of Tahreek Minhaj-ul-Quran Allama Tahirul Qadri for bringing political reforms and said the PPP-led government would not allow inclusion of the judiciary and Army in the interim set-up‚ as suggested by him. He said that politicians would form the interim set-up.
The functioning of institutions as per Dr Qadri’s agenda was impossible, he said. “Dr Sahib should contest the general elections under the Constitution and as per political traditions,” he said.
Kaira said that all the people were respectable, but the PPP would sit only with the politicians. He said that the warnings of Dr Tahirul Qadri were meaningless and nobody could obstruct the upcoming general elections.
Replying to a question‚ Qamar Zaman Kaira said the MQM had its own point of view regarding the delimitations in Karachi. He said the election would be held on time and there was no possibility of any delay in this regard
Paying tributes to the slain ANP leader, Bashir Ahmed Bilour, the minister said that he was a brave man. “Only the PPP and the ANP are being targeted by the terrorists,” he said. “We will follow the path of Bilour.”
The minister claimed that terrorism was at its peak when the PPP came into power after the general elections in 2008 and now the back of terrorists had been broken and the writ of law had been established in Swat, Malakand and other troubled areas. “The PPP government has led the nation to back the armed forces against terrorism,” he said.
Later, Kaira announced a grant of Rs500,000 for the Renala Khurd Press Club.
