KARACHI: The mobile phone services were suspended unannounced for seven hours in Karachi on Friday
Interior Minister Rehman Malik said no target killing incident happened due to the suspension of mobile phone services. Earlier, the decision to suspend the mobile phone services in the province was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Interior Minister Rehman Malik in interior Sindh.
The Additional Inspector General of Police, Iqbal Mahmood, told The News that the Sindh government had received terrorism threats in interior Sindh, and the federal government on the request of the Sindh government suspended the mobile phone services for seven hours in the province to counter threats of terrorism.
He also said thousands of security personnel had been deployed to control law and order situation in the province. Police commandos were guarding the railway stations, he added.
Agencies add: Meanwhile, the wireless service of the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) was also suspended in Karachi.
Sources said the cellular service providers had suspended their service after receiving orders from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).
The PTA did not give any reason for shutting the cellular service in Karachi.
Interior Minister Rehman Malik said that mobile service was suspended in Karachi on Friday morning due to terrorism threat and security concerns.
He said a meeting was held in this regard with all the stakeholders. He said the nefarious designs of terrorists were foiled as not a single incident of target killing took place on Friday.
The minister also appreciated the performance of law enforcement agencies.
