As the weekend of December 1st, 2012 rolled around, residents of Doyline, Louisiana, received an explosive surprise as they were notified that they needed to evacuate the area after more than six million pounds of improperly stored explosives – intended for military use – were discovered at the Explo Systems facility located just outside of town. Although the explosives need a charge to detonate, it was determined that the town was at risk of an epic explosion, prompting officials to begin the immediate evacuation. As of now, roughly half of the town's population has follow through with those orders, while another 400 or so residents wait things out in hopes of a quiet resolution.
The massive mess of explosive materials was discovered by a state trooper who was doing a follow up after an October explosion at the Explo site. Originally estimated at close to one million pounds, more materials were found scattered around the facility-formerly a munitions plant-some in containers and some not.
Authorities began the cleanup process over the weekend, and have been actively monitoring the weather, as a storm front has moved into the area and lightening presents an immediate threat. The fear is that a single spark could instigate a domino-effect type explosion, and with so much explosive material it's nearly impossible to predict the damage such an event would inflict upon Doyline.
The materials were stored in a condensed area of less than ten-acres, making the potential of a domino-effect explosion even more likely. So far, more than one million pounds of explosives have been secured, and or transported to a secure facility.
For over 15 years Explo Systems has handled the demilitarization of explosives and propellants. The company has issued no statements or comments, formal or informal, regarding the incident, though a manager has been present for all of the clean-up efforts.
Doyline was used in the filming of some scenes from the popular HBO television program "True Blood", which has helped draw national attention to the story.
