MELBOURNE: Pakistan players and officials celebrated the win against India and the bronze medal at the Champions Trophy in style.
Pakistan players took a round of the State Netball Hockey Centre following the hooter, raising the Pakistan green flag and chanting slogans of ‘Pakistan Zindaabad’.
The capacity crowd, which included hundreds of Pakistanis living here, clapped for Pakistani players.
Aqeel Ahmad, who hails from Larkana in Pakistan, turned up with his entire family to watch Pakistan in action against India. “I have been living here since I was 16. Whenever Pakistan team, cricket or hockey, lands in Australia, I follow them. It is great news that we have won a bronze. I thought we had no chance of even finishing among the top four teams.”
Mafooz Ahmad, an accounts student studying here at a local university, lifted Shakil Abbasi on his shoulders following the win. “Of late Pakistan have been struggling on hockey field. The bronze medal has, however, brought them back in contention to become one of the best in the world. They have won our hearts as they have defeated India.”
Even the local Australians who thronged the stadium to watch their team in action against Holland in the title decider were all praise for the Greenshirts.
