Sectarian killings dominated the violence in the city on Wednesday as three workers of the Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jamaat were gunned down, while an activist of the Jamaat-e-Islami and two others were among the six people killed in various incidents.
Three ASWJ men slain
A 25-year-old activist of the Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ), Qari Imran, was gunned down outside a shop near the Noor-e-Subhani Masjid on Nishtar Road.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Asad Raza of Jamshed Division said the victim was loading credit on his phone when two armed motorcyclists pulled up to the shop and shot him once in the head before speeding away.
Imran was rushed to the Civil Hospital, where he died. The empties of the 9mm pistol used in the offence were dispatched for forensic tests. The victim was a resident of the same area and also the Muazzin of the Noor-e-Subhani Masjid.
Members of the ASWJ reached the hospital and staged a protest, during which they blamed a rival group for the murder. Investigators maintained that this was a targeted attack and confirmed that the victim was an activist of the ASWJ.
Meanwhile another supporter of the ASWJ, 45-year-old Ghulam Shabbir, fell prey to four bullets fired from the guns of target killers on motorcycles. Three of them struck him in the chest, while the fourth lodged in his head. The attack took place near Mughal Kanta on the main Manghopir Road.
The victim died while being treated at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
Station House Officer (SHO) Nasir Mehmood of the Manghopir police station said Shabbir was a resident of Qasba Colony and originated from Punjab.
The police said the victim was a supporter of the ASWJ and he was killed in a targeted incident; however, they added that other motives would also be looked into.
Meanwhile, the Mohtamim of the Masjid-i-Tauheed and an ASWJ supporter, 35-year-old Qari Abdul Samee, was shot dead in the head while he was walking along the Ghazi Salahuddin Road in the Bahadurabad police remits.
SDPO Naeem Akhtar of Bahadurabad Division said that Qari Samee also taught the Quran to children and resided in the Dhorajee Society. He added that the attack took place near the Marium Masjid. The victim died of his injuries at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.
Investigators said this was yet another sectarian attack and confirmed that the victim was a supporter of the ASWJ.
Man shot
Fifty-five-year-old Saifullah was shot dead at his teashop in the Illyas Goth of the Ibrahim Hyderi police limits. The incident took place late on Tuesday night and the victim expired during the wee hours of Wednesday morning.
Police said that Saifullah resided in the same area as he was killed. They added that three motorcyclists carried out the deadly attack and fled, leaving the victim lying in a pool of blood.
Saifullah was moved to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) where he died early on Wednesday morning. Four bullets to various parts of the body were determined as the cause of his death.
Investigators said it was too early to determine the exact motive, but said that the possibility of a targeted attack would be probed. The victim was a supporter of a religious group and there were reports that he had a rivalry with another group. His family suspected that the rival group was responsible for the brutal murder.
JI worker murdered
Twenty-eight-year-old JI worker Aslam Mujahid was shot four times in the face by two gunmen on a motorcycle outside his house in Sector-34 of Korangi 2½. The killers managed to flee after leaving the victim in a critical condition.
He was taken to the JPMC, where members of the JI also reached. The worker was pronounced dead on arrival, while leaders and activists of the party staged a protest and demanded the immediate arrest of the killers.
The police dispatched the spent 9mm bullet casings to the forensics division.
Teenager shot dead
A nineteen-year-old named Shujaat Hussain was shot dead a short distance from his house in the Raja Tanveer Colony in Toori Bangash.
The victim was a social media activist and a university student.
The victim had just left his house late on Tuesday night when two motorcyclists pulled up and shot him once in the neck, while another bullet was aimed at his head.
The victim was being treated at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where he died on Wednesday morning. Police said that the killers used a 9mm pistol in the offence, the casings of which were sent to the forensics division.
Hussain originated from Haripur in the Hazara Division and investigators said this was a case of sectarian killing.
The funeral prayers of the deceased took place at the Old Rizvia Imambargah, while he was buried at Wadi-e-Hussain graveyard in Sohrab Goth.
