The Anti-Extremism Cell (AEC) of the Crime Investigation Department (CID), Sindh, on Wednesday claimed to have arrested three alleged target killers belonging to a banned religious outfit and a political party.
The three were wanted in a number of cases of sectarian and political killings.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mohammad Aslam Khan of the AEC said an informant had tipped him off that the accused were present in the Manghopir area.
Acting on the tip-off, a police team raided the area and arrested Syed Ali Raj alias Ali after an encounter. However, his associates managed to escape under the cover of fire.
The police had shifted the arrested man to the interrogation unit and recovered a TT pistol from his possession.
SSP Khan said Ali belonged to a banned religious outfit and confessed to murdering several people, including religious scholars, during the past few months.
The accused along with his associates killed Mohammed Akber and Rizwan in the Yousuf Plaza area, besides Maulana Shakirullah and Maulana Asif in the Samanabad police remit, said the police officer.
The accused and his associates also killed Atif, an owner of Faiz-i-Shaireen, in the Rizvia police remit, and Qari Hassan in the Samnabad area, according to the SSP.
He said they were interrogating Ali when they received information that members of another group involved in sectarian killings were present in the SITE-A police limits.
Another AEC team was then rushed to the area. On seeing the police, the accused opened fire, which was retaliated by the police.
After an encounter, the police arrested Akber Ali alias Nanah and Syed Tanveer Ahmed, and also recovered two 9mm pistols and as many Kalashnikovs.
During the initial interrogation, the two men said they were workers of a Karachi-based political party and murdered a number of people in sectarian and political killings in the past few weeks.
They also confessed to killing Mohammad Jameel, Naseer Ahmed and Naseeruddin in the Garden police remit, Nouman Baig and Imran Baig in Sachal, Azam in Gulshan, Aneel Baloch in Mobina Town, Shaukat Lance Naik of the Pakistan Rangers Sindh in Mobina Town, estate agent Azhar Haris in Mobina Town, two Mohajir Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi workers, Police Inspector (PI) Zafarullah, two police constables and 15 others in various parts of the city.
