PM lifts ban on mobile number portability

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf on Thursday withdrew the earlier restriction imposed on mobile number portability and said that the present arrangement of number portability would continue due to the high integrity of data.

He directed that mobile companies would continue to issue SIM cards from their own business and self operated centres as well as franchise centres after due verification from National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra). However, the sale of SIMs from retail network shall remain suspended until the biometric devices are deployed at each centre, he said.

The prime minister took these decisions after he met a delegation of chief executive officers (CEOs) of private cellular operators at the PM’s House.The prime minister also directed withdrawal of the condition of delivery of SIMs by couriers and the need for showing second identity for issuance of SIMs.

While talking to Chairman/Chief Executive Officer VimpleCom, the holding company of Mobilink, Jo Lunder, Prime Minister Raja said that government has taken a decision to expedite the auction of 3-G mobile license in the country keeping in view the benefits it would bring for the people in the shape of providing easy access to employment opportunities, education, health, agriculture and other social needs.

He said that government was committed to pursue policies to facilitate the investors in all sectors particularly the telecom to attract modern technology for the benefit of the people of Pakistan. He reiterated the resolve of the government to provide enabling environment in this regard. While acknowledging the prospects in the telecom sector of Pakistan, he stated that it has a lot of room for further growth.

Meanwhile, in a meeting, Prime Minister Raja directed the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Information technology to immediately sit with Customs and other relevant authorities to streamline the import and local assembling of cellular handsets in the country and ensure that all handsets bear unique identification numbers (IMEI) and handsets without IMEI and duplicate IMEI be banned.

The prime minister said that measures taken by the government in the cellular sector would be guided by the fact that the normal lifestyle of the common man was least affected. The government would also ensure that minimum inconvenience is caused to masses. Every effort will be made to facilitate the cellular companies, he emphasised. He said that the government would consult all stakeholders before taking decisions on issues concerning the cellular sector. He said that Pakistan was facing the menace of terrorism which has affected our lifestyle and “we have to accept certain restrictions for the greater good of the masses”.

The prime minister said that the recent decision to block mobile phones in certain cities during Muharram was taken in national interest as it was unavoidable and extremely necessary, as safety and security of life and property was of paramount importance.

Those who attended the meeting include Prime Minister’s Advisor on IT, Dr Basit Riaz, Secretary Interior Khawaja Siddique Akbar, Chairman PTA Farooq Awan, secretary IT and other senior officials.
