LAHORE
The Lahore High Court on Wednesday disposed of a petition challenging the increase in price of petroleum products and slab rates of Sui Gas.
Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial observed that the petitioner should first avail alternative remedy under Section 12(2) of OGRA Ordinance 2002 and rule 16 of natural gas tariff rules 2002, before invoking jurisdiction of the court.
The petition was filed by Muhammad Hanif Goraya, Consumer Rights Forum Pakistan general secretary. The petitioner contended that the government had repeatedly increased POL and gas prices, making it even harder for the common man to survive. Ironically, petroleum products price were on the decline at international market but the Pakistani government was increasing prices on regular basis, he said and requested the court to set aside a notification about increase in slab rates of gas.
The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) and Sui Northern Gas Pipeline (SNGPL) filed their replies and requested the court to dismiss the petition for being non-maintainable. The respondents were of the view that, before invoking the jurisdiction of the high court, the petitioner had an alternative remedy under Section 12(2) of Ogra Ordinance 2002 to agitate against the POL prices.
