People assertive about rule of law, their rights: CJ

ISLAMABAD: A 10-member delegation of the Peshawar High Court Bar Association (PHCBA) headed by its President Abdul Latif Afridi and comprising Khalid Anwar Afridi, Member Executive Committee Supreme Court Bar and other office bearers and members called on Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Friday.

Talking to the delegation, the CJ said: “There is a close nexus between bench and bar, therefore, both should work hard for the cause of the administration of justice”. He lauded the role played by the PHCBA during the lawyers’ movement and said that the legal fraternity had brought a change in the society by creating awareness amongst the masses and as a result the masses were more assertive in the protection of their legal rights and prevalence of rule of law in the country.

The delegation praised the efforts of the chief justice for the cause of independence of judiciary, the rule of law and constitutionalism. They informed him about their problems like effective functioning of judicial system in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP). They further informed the chief justice that five circuit benches were working in the KP and there was a shortage of judges in the Peshawar High Court, which might be increased. They further said that the trust of public at large in the judiciary had enhanced due to which the ratio of litigation had also increased.

The chief justice also appreciated the efforts of legal fraternity for the cause of dispensation of justice.  The delegation praised his steadfastness, devotion, commitment, determination and efforts for the cause of justice and assured him of their full support and cooperation.
