Pacers lift HBL after poor start

KARACHI: The fast bowlers on Wednesday brought second-placed Habib Bank Limited (HBL) back on top after their batsmen failed to pile up a big total against United Bank Limited (UBL) on the first day of their four-day seventh round game of the President’s Trophy Grade-I at the Pindi Stadium in Rawalpindi.

Habib Bank were dismissed for 193 in their first innings after they were invited into bat first.Wicketkeeper-batsman Humayun Farhat blasted a quick-fire 79 off 81 deliveries, hitting 12 fours and two sixes and single-handedly took his side to a respectable total as at one stage Habib Bank were struggling at 65-6.

He was extended valuable support by Test pacer Umar Gul (27) as the duo added 59 valuable runs for the seventh wicket association. Gul, playing his first match, cracked four fours and a six in his 39-ball knock.

Skipper Younis Khan (23) and Imran Farhat (19) were the other distinguished contributors while Ahmed Shehzad (2) and Asad Shafiq (0) failed to click.Left-arm medium-pacer Rumman Raees was the main destroyer who picked 5-70 while left-arm orthodox Kashif Bhatti clinched 3-51 and Test-discarded Shabbir Ahmed got 2-35.

In reply, United Bank were struggling at 58-5 at close. Abid Ali scored 20 while Imran Ali was batting on 18.Pacemen Abdul Ameer and Ehsan Adil shared two wickets each while Umar Gul took his first wicket of the season when he sent opener Ali Asad for just one, caught by Ahmed Shehzad.

Meanwhile, at the Diamond Club Ground in Islamabad, State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) were 261-8 in their first innings at stumps against Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL).

Opener Gulraiz Sadaf cracked 69 with 11 fours. The Burewala-born 27-year old right-hander put on 126 runs for the opening stand with skipper Kashif Siddiq who belted 53 with six boundaries.

Mohammad Saad and Rameez Raja scored 43 each with Saad hitting four boundaries and Rameez smashing seven fours.

Left-armer Sohail Tanvir, who played his last Test against India in 2007, bowled brilliantly, claiming 6-51 in 19.5 overs.

Leaders Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) were 160-4 against third-placed Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) as only 63.4 overs were made possible due to bad weather at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.Left-hander Ali Waqas was at the crease on 68 in which he hammered 11 fours.

Earlier, Test opener Mohammad Hafeez scored 37 with six fours and Taufeeq Umar fell on 13. Skipper Misbah-ul-Haq failed to score a big innings and was trapped leg before off left-arm pacer Najaf Shah for 16. Anwar Ali took 3-51.

National Bank were bowled out for 164 by WAPDA at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad. Test wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal top-scored with 37 which was laced with five boundaries while Hammad Azam (29) and skipper Fawad Alam (22) were the other distinguished scorers.

Left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar took 4-86, taking his tally to 44 at the summit while pacers Junaid Khan and Sarfraz Ahmed shared three wickets each.

WAPDA, who tasted an unexpected defeat at the hands of Port Qasim in their last game, were 44 without loss at close.

Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) were 268-8 against Port Qasim Authority at the KRL Ground in Rawalpindi. Opener Hamza Parachi top-scored 42 with six hits to the fence while Nouman Ali made 41 with six fours and Tayyab Riaz contributed 34. Wicketkeeper Zulfiqar Jan was batting on 32. Ahmed Jamal picked 3-46 while Test pacer Tanvir Ahmed grabbed 2-76.
