Masud-Tanvir, Bhurgari win bridge titles

KARACHI: The experienced duo of Masud Mazhar and Tanvir Mazahir emerged triumphant in the pairs event while the veteran A K Bhurgari won the individual competition in the Karachi Bridge Association (KBA) weekly contests held over the weekend here at the Aslam Bridge Hall, housed in the National Stadium.

The Mitchell pair event attracted 14 contestants with Masud Mazhar-Tanvir Mazahir clinching the title by giving excellent display of their bidding prowess. They scored 61.51%.

Nadeem Khalid-Tariq Zafar gave them a run for their money but they fell short by a whisker as they scored 60.32, followed by Shaikh Muqeet-Zafar Zaki both scoring who aggregated 59.92%.

As many as 20 players contested the individual event, which included stalwarts like Ziaullah Baig, Khalid Mohiuddin and others.

Bhurgari, however, managed to outshine all the competitors winning the contest with a handsome score of 64.38%, followed by another two veterans Maqbool Ahmed (61.88%) and Abdul Ghafar Qureshi 60.13%.

Six teams lined up for the one-day five rounds Swiss Movement. Aces, having Dr Ahmed Hasan, Mushahid Siddiqui, Khalid Zaki and F A Naeem, had a wonderful day.

Starting their match to victory stand with a thumping victory 25-3 against Mushtaq, they fell to the aggression of Stalwarts in the second round 23-7, however, recovered in the next three matches, defeating Noori 25-5, Attackers 17-13 and finally Foxy 22-8. Aces scored 96 VPs.

Stalwarts, featuring Zafar Zaki, Anwer Kizilbash, Farhat Abbas and Javed Rehman scored 93 VPs for the second position.

They won all the five matches, beating Foxy 17-13, Aces 23-7, Mushtaq 19-11, Noori 18-12 and Attackers 16-14. Foxy, comprising of A K Bhurgari, Hashim Hameed, A. G. Qureshi and Shaikh Muqeet, finished third with a score of 75 VPs.

Meanwhile the Karachi Club Monthly Pairs event will be held today (Tuesday) here at the Karachi Club main. It is their monthly pairs bridge competition and it is open to all competitive bridge players. The programme will commence at 6 pm.
