Last four years statistics of VAW call for stricter policies

Islamabad

As Pakistan’s civil society and government plans to commemorate International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (VAW) on November 25, the collective statistics of VAW during last four years call for substantive measure and more strict policies and their implementation towards the increasing trend of VAW in the society.

According to media reports, there were total 32,658 cases of VAW reported in last four years with 8,096 cases of only abduction and 5,817 cases of murder. The statistics were collected by ‘Policy and Data Monitor on Violence Against Women’, a joint project of Trocaire and Aurat Foundation.

The purpose of the project is to work towards the issues of violence against women by pushing them higher in priority on the agendas of major political parties and decision-making bodies, and by getting them addressed through positive legislative action and policies.

Number and Percentage of Cases of VAW in Pakistan during 2008-2011 depict an overall increase of 6.74 per cent in past four years with 7,571 cases reported in 2008, 8,548 in the year 2009, 8,000 in 2010 and 8,539 such incidents in 2011. Lahore is the top most district with reported cases of VAW cases of VAW (754).

Women’s activists mark November 25 as a day to fight violence against women since 1981. In Pakistan, public as well as private departments and civil society organisations will arrange different seminars, conferences, walks, rallies and functions to highlight the plight of those women who are victims of violence.

On December 17, 1999, the United Nations General Assembly designated November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women through Resolution 54/134.

Marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called on governments to live up to their obligations to end the global problem of violence against women and girls, one of the most widespread human rights violations.

“On this International Day, I call on all governments to make good on their pledges to end all forms of violence against women and girls in all parts of the world,” said the UN chief, in a message for the Day. “I urge all people to support this important goal,” he mentioned in his statement issued on this occasion.

The Secretary-General’s appeal comes ahead of the March 2013 session of the 45-member UN Commission on the Status of Women, which will focus on preventing and eliminating violence against women and girls. Thousands of government and civil society representatives are expected to converge on UN Headquarters in New York for the annual meeting.
