KARACHI: As expected Habib Bank Limited (HBL) confirmed their berth in the final on Friday when their game against Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) ended in a draw, while PIA’s hopes of playing the summit clash ended with a seven-wicket defeat at the hands of KRL in the President’s Trophy Grade-I National Cricket Championship.
HBL will face SNGPL in the final soon after the National T20 Championship which will be held here from December 3-10. Before that, the last round matches will be played from November 26-29.
Set a target of 139 to win at the Diamond Ground in Islamabad, Habib Bank were restricted by SNGPL to 73-5 in their second innings in 36 overs.
Test opener Imran Farhat was the only one who batted with authority, hitting fluent 44 off 56 balls with seven fours. Shan Masood (3), Ahmed Shehzad (2), Asad Shafiq (3) and Umar Gul (4) fell cheaply.
Skipper Younis Khan remained not out on seven while Usman Salahuddin on two when the bails were drawn at the end of the game.
Left-arm spinner Imran Khalid took two, ending with five wickets in the match, while Samiullah Khan Niazi, Asad Ali and Zahoor Khan picked one wicket apiece. Zahoor took five wickets in the match.
Earlier, after having conceded 61 runs lead, SNGPL began their second innings at 145-5 and perished for 199.
The 19-year-old right-arm pacer Ehsan Adil was the pick of the bowlers as he clinched 4-44, for a match haul of 6-81. Ehsan, who will play for Faisalabad Wolves in the T20 National Championship, stretched his tally to 53, just three wickets short of the leading wicket-taker Zulfiqar Babar.
Left-arm pacer Abdul Ameer took 3-55, for match figures of 6-112.
Left-arm spinner Aslam Qureshi clinched 2-37, concluding with 6-100 in the tie.
Habib Bank, with the three points, which they secured due to first innings lead, cruised to the final with 51 points.
SNGPL, who had already made it to the title clash with 54 points, had rested five of their key players, including regular skipper Misbah-ul-Haq.
SNGPL had scored 232 in their first innings while in reply Habib Bank had posted 292.
Meanwhile, KRL scored their third victory when they defeated Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) convincingly to take their points to 30 on the fifth spot.
KRL raced to the 120-run target in 27.1 overs after losing three wickets at the KRL Stadium in Rawalpindi.
Opener Tayyab Riaz made 54 off 67 balls with ten fours. Test pacer Aizaz Cheema took two wickets, ending with five in the match.
Earlier, after having faced a 75-run first innings deficit, PIA resumed their second innings at 116-4 and were dismissed for 194 in 65.3 overs. Test wicket-keeper Sarfraz Ahmed scored 53 not out. The right-hander smashed eight fours in his 76-ball innings.
Test discard Faisal Iqbal fell for 44, trapped leg before off Rahat Ali after adding just two runs to his overnight total. His innings was studded with five fours.
Yasir Ali took 3-34, while Ali Khan picked 3-41, ending with six wickets in the match.
Slow left-arm orthodox Nayyar Abbas claimed 2-28, ending with five wickets.
PIA had scored 268 in their first innings while in response KRL had staged 343.
The loss left PIA at the third place with 33 points.
WAPDA survived a scare before sealing a narrow four-run win against State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad.
Chasing a victory target of 165, State Bank resumed their second innings at 127-9 and when they reached 160 in the 51st over Adnan Raees fell for 46, stumped by keeper Kaleem Ahmed off left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar. Mardan-born left-hander hit three sixes and two fours and dominated the 33-run stand for the tenth wicket with Mohammad Naved who remained not out on one.
Zulfiqar Babar took 7-74, ending with 9-112, which took his tally to 56 in the season.
The victory took WAPDA to the fourth place with 30 points while State Bank were left at the eighth place with 18 points.
WAPDA had scored 202 and 118 while State Bank had posted 156 in their first innings.
