Karachi
A fire broke out at the multi-storey head office of a private bank on II Chundrigar Road on Monday.
It took the firefighters more than four hours to douse the flame. By that time, the blaze, believed to be caused by a short circuit, had reduced goods worth millions to ashes.
The Central Fire Station told The News that the fire erupted at the head office of Bank AlFalah at about 3:45pm. Ten fire engines and two snorkels were dispatched to extinguish the blaze. Karachi Electric Supply Company workers also rushed to the scene and disconnected the power supply to the building. Police and others law enforcement agencies cordoned off the area and ambulances were parked nearby.
The fire rapidly spread in the building and as it had erupted during the bank’s work hours, many employees and others were trapped inside. Rescue workers had to break windows to help them escape. Some people had rushed to the building’s roof to protect themselves from the smoke. They were rescued with the help of the snorkels.
