Farhan in quarters of Edmonton Open


KARACHI: Pakistan’s Farhan Zaman reached the quarter-finals of the $15,000 ReidBuilt Homes Edmonton Open at Edmonton, Canada, on Thursday, but Danish continued with his poor performance and bowed out in the first round.

Farhan easily defeated qualifier Fred Reid of Canada 11-3, 11-5, 11-6 in 22 minutes in the first round.

He will face top seed Zac Alexander of Australia in the quarter-final.

Meanwhile, Danish Atlas Khan, ranked 90th, was beaten by third seed Matthew Karwalski of Australia, ranked 60th, 11-9, 6-11, 12-10, 11-8 in 47 minutes.

Danish has had a rough patch recently: he lost in the first round of Goodlife Open; failed to qualify for the main round of Toronto Cup; and lost in the first round of Saskatoon Open.

Farhan has put up relatively better performances: he reached the quarter-finals of Toronto Cup; and lost in the first round of Goodlife Open and Saskatoon Open.

Farhan has also got direct entry in the main round of $10,000 Betty F Griffin Memorial Florida State Open 2012, which is to be held at Boca Raton, Florida, the United States, from December 13-16. Farhan, ranked 98th, is drawn against Scott Arnold of Australia, ranked 103rd, in the first round.
