The health care industry is experiencing growth. Due to the growth of the aging population, more people are requiring health care services. One of the fields in health care that is experiencing above average growth is the dental care field. So in terms of career it's a good choice to go into the healthcare industry particularly dental care.

However becoming a licensed dentist takes several years to accomplish not to mention the money you'll have to spend in tuition, laboratory fees as well as paying for patients you'll practice your skills on.
Luckily there's an alternative if you want to go into the dental care field but you can't afford to pay for tuition. You can start a career as a Dental Assistant.

Dental assistants are the health care professionals who help licensed dentists in their office and clinics. These professionals perform office and clinical functions. In the office, dental assistants do paper works, keep medical and dental history, and schedule appointments.

On the clinical side of things, they help dentists by preparing dental equipment, sterilizing tools, and ordering supplies. Their tasks will also include assisting the dentists by passing dental tools while the dentists perform operations on patients.

Aside from exciting and challenging tasks, dental assistants also benefit from good compensation. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, they make $16 per hour on average along with other benefits.

The demand for employment is also on the rise with more dentists putting up their own clinics and patients availing of dental care increasing, dentists are forced to hire dental assistants to help them manage their office, do paperwork and help them serve patients.

Becoming a dental assistant is really great, however there are still some key skills required from individuals who plan to start their career in this field. Those who think of becoming one should first evaluate themselves and think if they are caring, excellent in communication skills, and detail oriented.
Empathy is a must in this field since most of the patients will be in pain. We all know how inconvenient a tooth ache is and how painful the first steps in tooth extraction are, so dental assistants must show empathy.

Excellent communication skills is another quality required from professionals in this field since they will be exposed to different types of people in different age groups from young children to senior citizens.

Finally, being detail oriented is a plus factor, in fact not just in dental care industry but in all health care industries. Information given and tasks performed in all health care fields are critical. It has a direct impact on patient's health and well-being so it's a must for professionals in this field to be detail oriented.
